"Language fulfills its potential only if we use it correctly." (106)
triangle of meaning
- Developed by two communication theorist: C.K. Ogden and I.A. Richards
- three points: thought, word and thing.
- There is no direct relationship between words and things.
- Words do not "mean"; people give meanings to words.
Example) If you call a table a pineapple is it not still the same object. If us as a class called that table a pineapple everyday the table would be known as a pineapple to us, but to someone who knows it as a table it would be a table but either way it is still the same object.
