Guidelines for Developing Language Skills
- Identify How Labels Affect Your Behavior: Always remember that words are nothing more than symbols. At times we see words as things and that we are one in the same but this is not true, we just put lables on them as a way of understanding or relating to them. Be sure to make judgements on things based on how you react not on what others or lables make them out to be.
- Identify How the Words You Use Affect Your Feelings and Attitudes: Be aware when communicating not to delude your thoughts by what you feel. Listen to people around you and make judgements based on facts not feelings or attitudes. Use words thats are acceptable and not bias to your person feelings.
- Identify How Expierence Can Affect Meaning: Remember that no two people have the same meaning of the same word. For example if you hear the word tree, in your mind you may see a tree that you had a childhood expierence playing under, where as someone else may see a palm tree because they grew up around palm trees. Remeber that expierences shape our thoughts and meanings
- Be Sure That Meanings Are Shared: Be sure to ask questions to be sure that your meaning is being interpreted the way you intend it to be. Ask what people think and clear up any misconceptions.
